Ancient Habitats: How People Changed the Gwent Levels

Join Dig Ventures’ guest speakers and discover how archaeology can inform conservation efforts today in the natural environments of the Gwent Levels.

Throughout history the Gwent Levels has been a unique environment, so when it comes to preserving it in the present, what better way to understand the best processes than by looking to the past?

In this live online event, we'll be joined by guest speakers Professor Martin Bell, Dr Mark Lewis and Professor Stephen Rippon who will share their own archaeological expertise and knowledge of the Levels as part of a wider debate on wildlife and conservation.

Join us to learn about:

  • How people have shaped the Gwent Levels

  • Archaeology, natural history and environments through the ages

  • Can the past inform future management?

  • Plus, there'll be a chance to ask your own questions!

Our Speakers

Our first speaker, Professor Martin Bell from the University of Reading, will be discussing prehistory, with focus on environmental changes and experimental archaeology.

Dr Mark Lewis, a Research Fellow at the University of Cardiff, will talk on Roman history. Having grown up on the Levels, Mark now spends his days researching the history of his home. His talk will include information on Caerleon Roman Fort, which is the topic of his upcoming book.

Finally, we're also joined by Professor Stephen Rippon from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Exeter.
