Archaeology of the Severn Estuary Conference

Lysaghts Institute, Orb Drive, Newport, NP19 0RA

This year’s conference is dedicated to the memory of Professors John Coles and John Allen who both passed away this year. Several of the presentations cover topics they were interested in. The speakers include;

Prof. Stephen Rippon on the reclamation and exploitation of the wetlands in the Roman period

Prof Aidan O’Sullivan on the value of experimental archaeology (with an emphasis on wetlands)

Dr Toby Jones on the incredible medieval Newport Ship and what has been discovered about it during its analysis and conservation

Dr Alex Bayliss on a recent project in Somerset combining palaeoenvironmental data and dating analysis to understand how Neolithic farmers changed the landscape and how that fits with new chronologies for Neolithic monuments

Dr Alan Cattell on how an incredible collection of over 850 (largely unpublished) cores can reveal the hidden Holocene landscapes of Avonmouth.

There will also be a presentation on the heritage projects undertaken as part of the Living Levels landscape project in Gwent including a short film showing changes in the local landscape over the millennia.
