The Tudor period saw momentous religious and administrative changes that affected Monmouthshire. Join Tony Hopkins as we explore the landscape after the monks...
The pivotal decade was the 1530s when Henry VIII passed three acts which were particularly significant; one dissolved the monasteries, another ‘assimilated’ Wales with England and created the county of Monmouthshire, while a third regulated the commissions responsible for maintaining sea defences, of especial importance to coastal Gwent.
The impact of these acts on the society and economy of the Levels will be the main theme of the talk. It will include the fortunes of Chepstow, Newport and Cardiff, the three towns adjoining the Levels.
We welcome back Tony Hopkins, formerly County Archivist at Gwent Archives; now semi-retired and working as an archivist. Editor of Gwent Local History and co-editor of The Monmouthshire Antiquary. Tony has published a range of books and articles on Monmouthshire and South Wales history.
