Weaving rush plaited mats

Part of our series of discovering traditional Gwent Levels skills, learn how to plait Scirpus lacustris (bulrush) and Typha rushes into nine strand flat plaits to be sewn up into traditional door and bath mats on this 2-day course subsidised by the Living Levels Programme: Day 1 on the 13th February and Day 2 on the 27th February.

You will be taught a variety of plaiting techniques on Day 1 to produce a length of plait which will then be sewn up using jute into durable, attractive mats on Day 2. (February 27th).

This is an age old technique which has been used throughout the ages to produce durable, functional floor coverings
